Kitchen Table Poetry 🗣

Intro

This spoken word poem was inspired by the #MPPrompt prompt:

“Give me the recipe for a poem. Lay out all of its ingredients, give instructions.”

Some prompts ask for an answer. Others dare you to disagree with the question. This one did a little of both.

So, you’re looking for
the magic recipe for poetry.

Buckle up, sunshine.

This is gonna blow your mind.

There are people who preach,

“Follow these steps and you, too, can be a poet.”

I think that’s horseshit.

Poetry doesn’t come from a measuring cup.

It comes from your heart.

Your mind.

Your questions.

Your scars.

Your joy.

Your mistakes.

Your experiences.

And…

however willing you are
to let your creative beast out to play.

I guess if I had to create a list,
it would look something like this..

Curiosity
Observation
Perspective
Imagination

Many drafts.
Keep every single one.

And the secret ingredient…

The courage to write what you feel,
not what everyone wants to hear.
