Nothing Owed
Intro
This flash fiction story was inspired by my own writing challenge:
#AmpersandAfterDark /:\ Challenge 005 March 01, 2026
Your piece must begin in ordinary reality.
By the end, something impossible must be treated as normal.
AmpersandAfterDark is a writing prompt I host on Bluesky.
Doug checks his bank balance before work. The number is lower than he wants. Lunch can wait.
Two boxes of cereal sit side by side under fluorescent light. He studies them, returns the more expensive one to the shelf, and carries the other to the register. The total climbs. He waits for approval before breathing out. The receipt goes into his wallet.
The following Saturday, the receipt prints blank.
The cashier finishes bagging and looks past him. Doug stays where he is for a second, then lifts the bags and walks toward the exit. No one calls him back.
Apples rest in shallow bins without tags beneath them. He turns one over, rubbing the skin where a sticker should be. A woman beside him fills her bag and moves on.
The gas pump hums while the screen remains dark. His card rests between two fingers. Nothing asks for it. When the tank is full, he slips the card back into his wallet.
That night the banking app opens to a pale screen. His thumb hovers, then the phone clicks dark.
The wallet presses against his back pocket for several more days. One morning it stays behind on the dresser.
Keys. Phone. Door closed behind him.
Groceries move from cart to conveyor belt to paper bag without interruption. Faces reflect in the checkout screen. The belt hums. Hands exchange bags.
Friday drifts through the office with the usual talk about traffic and weather. No one lingers by their desk waiting for a notification.
Metal knocks under the kitchen sink. When the leak stops, the plumber stands and wipes his hands. Doug follows him halfway down the hall before realizing there is nothing to discuss.
Later, scrolling in bed, he orders a replacement phone charger. He presses the final button and sets the phone down. Two days later, a small box sits outside the door.
The coffee line compresses and releases. A cup appears on the counter. Doug takes it and steps aside.
The person behind him reaches forward without hesitation.
