Same Old Scars

This spoken word poem was inspired by the weekly #PoetsOfDoom challenge with the theme (or prompt):

“where adversity is overcome”

The challenge also required the poem to be written as Dansa poem. This is a structured poetic form built around repetition and recurring lines.

The audio version below is the intended experience, though the full text is included underneath for anyone unable to listen.

Rage burns calories,
slammed doors after midnight,
cheap apartments, police called again,
anger ruined my family,
Rage burns calories.

Lockup shoes on concrete,
chain gang in transport,
I inflicted my anger to every challenger,
Rage burns calories.

Office lights replaced bars,
tucked-in shirts, same old scars,
meetings are always a mistake,
Rage burns calories.

Plants lean into sun,
the hard years mostly done,
still learning quiet is real,
Rage burns calories.
