Spatula Podcast

Intro

This poem began with a writing challenge shared by the #PoetsOfDoom, based on a list of unwritten poem titles generously provided by poet Brian Bilston.

The challenge was simple: choose one title and write the poem it never became.

I chose two:

• “(Don’t Tell Me About) Your Brand New Podcast”
  and
• “Your Spatula”

I tend to enjoy making these challenges a little harder on myself. 🫠

Spatula Podcast

Derek sat at the kitchen table
talking about podcast equipment

I was trying to make chicken

“does this smell weird to you”

Derek said podcasts needed
a “strong visual identity”
even though they’re audio

I opened the fridge

something in there
had become
a dangerous liquid

“you listening”

“yeah hold on”

the spatula bent oddly
under the chicken
then snapped clean in half

Derek pointed at it

I said
nope
that was your spatula

Derek sat upright

oh!

that’s the title right there

Your Spatula

like he’d discovered fire
